Every farm has waste metal, old farm implements, iron, steel, aluminium, piping, wire fencing, copper, alloys, batteries, end of life vehicles and machinery. When something breaks around the farm it is often held onto in case it might come in useful some day. For too many years that old disc harrow has been sitting around, taking up much wanted space, attracting attention from unsolicited callers, posing a risk to the environment. Why not recycle it and ease cashflow woes. Metal can be recycled easily if it is segregated into ferrous (iron, steel) and non ferrous (aluminium, copper, brass, lead) types.

A public meeting was held in Claremorris last Tuesday night to discuss the granting of planning permission by the Mayo County Council for a biopharma facility and combined heat and power plant, fueled by biomass fuels at Kilbeg, Claremorris. The application had been made by Biopharamed West Ltd and Imperative Energy for the development last February, and the council granted permission for development on March 7 this year, with 39 conditions attached. At the meeting held on Tuesday night a committee was formed and a decision was made by a majority of those in attendance to lodge an objection to the development to An Bord Pleanála.

Ballintubber Passion Play is now in its 25th year of production. It is enacted in the grounds of Ballintubber Abbey, which were landscaped in 1986 with just such an event in mind. It involves a cast of 70 people, all drawn from the local community, and lasts one hour. A stand has been erected to accommodate the hundreds that come to experience it each year from all over Ireland. This year it takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week, March 25, 26 and 27.

A campaign is being organised this Easter by Road Safety Mayo County Council, the Mayo Advertiser, and Helena Chocolates, Castlebar, whereby members of the public are asked to come up with a road safety slogan to be put on an Easter egg, and the winner will receive an Easter egg with the slogan on it sponsored by Helena Chocolates.
Noel Gibbons, road safety officer with Mayo County Council, said this campaign is aimed to educate road users about the need to be courteous, to take care, and have common-sense when travelling over the busy Easter weekend.

The quality of drinking water in Mayo has improved according to a report recently released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The report shows that water in Mayo achieved 100 per cent compliance in microbiological parameters which is the same as it was in 2010, and 99.3 per cent compliance with chemical parameters which is an increase in quality compared with 98.9 per cent in 2010.
