Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has voiced her serious concerns at downgrading of physical education in the school curriculum and has described plans to reduce the time allocated to physical education as a retrograde step which will have a serious negative impact on the health of young people and warns that any such moves must be stopped in their tracks.

Two remanded on bail for drug possession with intent to supply

Two men were remanded on bail to appear in Castlebar District Court again on October 15 for either a hearing or a plea after both men were found in possession of over €1,200 each of cannabis. Sheldon Maye with an address at Drimelly, Cross, Co Mayo and Sean O’Connor, 8 Tower View, Ballinrobe, were arrested at 8 Tower View, Ballinrobe on foot of a search warrant executed by Gardaí on July 5 2013 at 2.42pm.

Mayo farmer denies sexual assault charge

A sexual assault case against a Mayo farmer which was heard at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday was adjourned until July 26 for a decision. The farmer strongly denied the charges and claimed his accuser demanded €1,000 from him to buy a car.

An intoxicated Claremorris man who walked into a Supermacs restaurant in the town and made a beeline for two members of An Garda Siochana and proceeded to tell one of the “You took my life, now it’s pay back, I’ll take yours” was found guilty of two breaches of the public order act in Castlebar District Court this week.

Defendants claimed the Gardaí were racist after stopping them

Two Claremorris men who were convicted for public order offences this week after they were stopped by Gardaí after a number of phone calls were made to the station in Claremorris to say that two males walking out the Balla road were a danger to traffic. On the day they were stopped they became abusive towards the Gardaí and one of them said: “You guards are racist, why don’t you go and arrest someone else.”

Man still being questioned in Castlebar double murder probe

Gardaí investigating the murder of two brothers in their home on New Antrim Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning continued questioning a 26-year-old man yesterday evening (Thursday). At the time of going to print the man had not been charged but was being detained at Castlebar Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act where he could be questioned for up to 24 hours. It is believed he has lived in Ballina and and more recently in Castlebar and is known to the gardaí and the psychiatric services.
