More than 25,000 to climb the Reek this Sunday

The annual pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick, known locally as Reek Sunday, is one of the major events in Westport and will attract over 25,000 visitors to this unique and historic event.

Local superintendent Aiden Foley outlined that “there will be amply designated car parking available for all visitors and we would ask people not to park on the public roadway approaching Croagh Patrick.”

Coroner for Mayo east condemns closure of courthouses

Mr Patrick O’Connor, coroner for Mayo East, this week hit out at the decision of the Court Service to close both of the courthouses in Swinford and Ballyhaunis. In a statement made at inquests being held in Swinford on Tuesday this week, Mr O’Connor said that the decision is a “regrettable, retrograde, reactionary decision that will, in the long-term have profound consequences for County Mayo. Not only will there be job losses in solicitors’ offices but there will be a serious economic effect on the entire east Mayo region of which Swinford has been the principal market town for more than 200 years.”

Taoiseach welcomes Energy Efficiency funding

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the announcement by Minister of State for Housing and Planning Development, Jan O'Sullivan, that Mayo is to receive an allocation of €190,000 in 2013 under the Energy Efficiency programme for local authority houses.

The Taoiseach said that the announcement “is good news for many of Mayo’s low income families and will bring about both better insulated homes and a reduction in bill costs. It is also very good news in terms of local employment with a total of 1,000 jobs to be created around the country for the programme’s duration, giving a much needed boost to Mayo’s skilled jobs market.”

Massive crowd expected for historic clash
