€3.4 million funding announced for water schemes in Mayo

Mayo County Council was this week granted €3.4 million from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government under the 2014 Rural Water Programme. The bulk of the funding relates to group water schemes for design, build, operate (DBO) projects, as well as connections to public mains and takeover projects.

Claremorris to become an Active Travel Town

Claremorris was selected this week as one of nine towns in the country that will become an Active Travel Town. The initiative has seen each of the towns get funding for local cycling and walking strategies, including new cycle-lanes, the provision of walkways, and behavioural change initiatives in local schools and workplaces to encourage people to switch their transport mode.

Claremorris was granted €431,000 from a national fund of €6.5 million.

Claremorris moved itself to the top of the technology chain this week when the town was unveiled as Ireland’s first fibre town Enet, Ireland’s open access network operator, is building Ireland’s first fibre town in Claremorris,  through a €0.5m investment in broadband infrastructure which sees AirSpeed Telecom offering 250Mbs broadband connectivity to local businesses.

St Gerald’s scoops more robotics prizes

St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, picked up three more robotics prizes last weekend, when students from the school won the second National Mini Sumo Robot Championship in Galway. The Castlebar based school saw off competition from 17 other schools to lift the title. The team of Matthew Moran and Cian Ruane took on a raft of challengers, including a second team from their own school comprising John Dolan and Dara Coll in the final of the competition.

Ballina should link up with Sligo for tourism

Fine Gael councillor John O’Hara suggested at this weeks Ballina Electoral Area Committee meeting that Ballina should look to link up with Sligo County Council to work on tourism initiatives in areas that straddle both counties, such as from the Quay in Ballina to Enniscrone and from the Windy Gap area in Bonniconlon to Lough Talt.

Cllr O’Hara said this was an untapped area that should be explored and would be of massive benefit to both counties in attracting tourists to the areas. “I think we’re missing out on a golden opportunity here, there are so many beautiful areas in this small area that is shared between the two counties, and if we sold it together would be a major benefit to both. There’s lots of beauty spots there that could be exploited more,” he said.

Mayo syndicate scoops €250,000 in EuroMillions

A syndicate from Mayo was just one number away from winning a massive €25.3 million EuroMillions jackpot. The group matched five numbers and one lucky star in the draw at the end of March to take home €258,237. The syndicate, who wish to keep their names private, bought their winning ticket in The Gem News, Bridge St, Ballyhaunis.
