Thousands to flock to Croagh Patrick for Reek Sunday

Upwards of 30,000 pilgrims are expected to flock to Croagh Patrick on Sunday for the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage on the holy mountain. While the thousands of pilgrims make their way up the mountain, the Mayo Mountain Rescue team will be co-ordinating a massive effort on the ground to ensure that any climbers who get into difficulty on the mountain will be quickly taken off the slope.

The stand-off between a number of agencies in regard to which is responsible for putting in a footpath between Scoil Naomh Bhríde in Ballycroy and the village centre, was raised by Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh at the West Mayo Municipal District this week. Cllr Conway-Walsh called on Mayo County Council to write to the NRA to get it to provide the footpath on the busy road.

Harrowing account given of Ballyvary house fire tragedy

A Ballyvary woman delivered a harrowing account of her repeated attempts to save her mother-in-law from a house fire, at an inquest in Castlebar on Monday.

Pathologist Dr Fadel Bennani told the inquest that Eileen McDonnell (78) from Laughravary, Ballyvary, succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning in the fire at her home on Ballyvary on March 7 last.
