Castlebar man to cycle in Uganda for charity

Brian Cawley, who runs the Castlebar Cycle Store on Richard Street in Castlebar, is about to undertake a charity cycle in Africa. Brian will cycle around Uganda this coming November in aid of World Vision Ireland. The cycle will raise funds for the charity which sponsors children in disadvantaged and war torn countries around the world, including providing much needed food to families in Gaza in recent weeks. Brian will be holding a number of events to raise funds for the charity in the coming weeks and months in Castlebar, starting with a table quiz in Bosh Bar, next Thursday night at 9pm. Government TDs welcome school improvement works

Both the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, and his Fine Gael colleague, John O’Mahony TD, have welcomed the announcement of funding for improvement works for schools in Mayo. In relation to funding for Mount St Michael Secondary School under the Department of Education and Skills, Emergency Works Scheme, Minister of State Ring said this week: “I am pleased that Mount St Michael Secondary School has been sanctioned funding under the Emergency Works Scheme. The funding for will be used for electrical works.”

Deputy John O’Mahony, in welcoming the funding for a new recourse room in Gortskehy NS in Hollymount, said this week: “This is a really positive development for the school community and I am delighted that this project can now go ahead. Gortskehy NS is a vibrant school and it has played a pivotal role in community life in Hollymount for many years and it is great to see that it will have a new classroom with all the necessary resources available in the near future. The project is ready to go to build and I would like to acknowledge the role played by the school staff and board of management in progressing it to this stage.” Minister Ring stated: “I am delighted that Gortskehy National School have been sanctioned funding for a 1 x 16m2 mainstream classroom. I am sure this mainstream classroom will be a very welcome addition to the school.”

Top travel blogger explores Mayo this week

Finnish travel blogger Satu Vänskä-Westgarth is taking on the “challenge of her lifetime” – cycling the entire Wild Atlantic Way, or some 2,500km along Ireland’s western seaboard, over the next five weeks.

Two Mayo businesses are in the running for the Great Carvery of the Year awards, following the announcement of the shortlist for Great Carvery Hotel of the Year and Great Carvery Public House of the Year. Mulroy’s Gastropub located on Main Street, Castlebar, has been nominated in the Public House section as one of three finalists from Connacht and 12 nationally, while The Dalton Hotel on Dalton Street, Claremorris, has been nominated in the hotel section.

Tesco stores in Mayo raised €81,000 for Aware

Tesco Ireland has announced that it has raised €2million for Aware through the fundraising efforts of Tesco’s employees and customers throughout the country and more than €81,000 was raised by Tesco stores in Mayo. The announcement marks the end of Tesco’s two-year Charity of the Year partnership with Aware which ran from 2012 to 2014, as selected by the company’s 15,000 employees.

Chronic shortage of beds for cancer patients is inhumane – Conway-Walsh

The chronic shortage of beds in University College Hospital Galway means more and more cancer patients are unable to receive vital treatment on time, according to Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh, who has called for immediate action to open up wards to meet the demand for beds. The Sinn Féin councillor has said the other alternative is to bring back a full time consultant to Mayo General Hospital so that cancer patients who require an overnight stay can have their chemo administered in Mayo.

New travel show started filming in Mayo this week

A new Irish travel series showcasing the west of Ireland has begun filming in Mayo this week. The new eight-part prime time series will challenge veteran journalist and best-selling author Dave Kenny to substitute his comfortable surroundings of Dalkey for the windswept Wild Atlantic Way. Kenny Wild will air this October on IrishTV (available on Sky channel 191, Freesat channel 400, Eircom’s eVision channel 191 and online at irishtv.ie).

Mayo carers give 161,000 unpaid hours weekly

Carers in Mayo give more than 161,000 hours unpaid care to the county’s sick, elderly and vulnerable each week. Of Mayo’s 6,558 carers, 40.5 per cent regularly work a minimum of one to 14 hours a week, whilst a further 50 per cent work between 15 and 43 hours a week.
