A notice of motion by independent Ballina Municipal District councillor Gerry Ginty, calling for the restoration of town councils or to give the municipal districts the authority to strike their own rate and ensure that the money collected remain in the local area received support and some criticism at this week’s districts meeting.

CCTV ready to go live in Westport

Independent Westport based councillor Chirsty Hyland has welcomed the progress on getting CCTV installed in Westport town. Cllr Hyland told the Mayo Advertiser that the first phase of the project is ready to go and be switched on in the coming weeks. He said: “It’s something that I have pushed hard on since I was first elected a town councillor. It’s great for the town, it won’t solve everything, but it will make people feel safer and can only be good.”

He went on to say: “It will be monitored 24 hours a day in the Garda station which is a massive benefit to all. It’s about being proactive and I’ve been very proactive on this issue and drove it on all the time.”

A number of changes to the housing grant schemes operated by Mayo County Council will be put before the elected members of the council when they next meet. At the Ballina Municipal District April meeting, director of services for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson, told the district members: “Housing grants are on the adjourned April agenda, hopefully we will get moving on that. We have approved grants up to December 2014. It’s important we do get the changes recommended through, because we are looking at currently being able to approve grants up to the end of February this year, and that’s it until probably next November unless we get changes.”

Reape calls for traffic calming at Quay Lane in Ballina

Annie May Reape has called for some kind of traffic calming measures to be put in place at Quay Lane, Ballina. Cllr Reape put forward a motion at this week’s Ballina Municipal District Meeting, saying: “I do welcome the ongoing work at the junction at the top of the lane, but this is no longer a lane in my opinion, it’s more of a roadway. There are 33 to 34 houses and 20 children living there. It’s a de facto housing estate, houses on both sides of the road, and there is a lot of activity going on there. We need to have some way of making it safe for the residents who live there, so people can walk, drive, and children can play. Even signage would be appreciated. I’ve had a lot of representation from residents there. There was a time a number of years ago, there was four houses, now we’ve 30 or so.”
