Here I sit perched on a bar stool in Boston, a sprig of shamrock in my lapel. Like a poet in exile, I’m marooned in the quiet realm of recollection. On this day the pathways of my mind are strewn with memories of Mayo. It’s Saint Patrick’s Day and it’s the dreams of Ireland in which my mind does dwell. The procession of green pageantry passes by the window. Spectators assemble in huddled anticipation as men and maidens of the Gael, freckled and fair march with swagger and pride. I stare out the window and my mind does wander, across the perimeter beyond the yonder. I lift the amber jar in silent salute to old Hibernia and to my fellow diaspora wherever they reside. I see Mayo now through a pitcher of beer and with a swig and cig the picture becomes clear.

It had been a funny sort of a week, all told, thought Michael as he took his place among the mourners. He slid a look at the shiny brown coffin at the front of St Joseph’s Church, but couldn't quite bring himself to think about what – who – it contained.
Michael ran a finger around his too tight collar and tried to distract himself with holy thoughts as Mass began. But this distinctly unusual week had been unsettling and it interfered with any attempt at serenity. He found himself trembling.

Fri, Oct 09, 2015
The elected members of the Claremorris Municipal District this week gave the go ahead for a material contravention to the county development plan for the construction of a major motor service area just past the McWilliam Park Hotel on the Kilcoman Road in the town. The original planning application had included the provision of a 46 bedroom motel as part of the development but that was removed from the plans by the developer. The access to the development will be gained by a new access road.
The zoning for the lands in the application is currently for industrial use, but Mayo County Council's planning section considered it appropriate to rezone the lands for this project, because it is within the town boundaries and it will be at the junction of two national primary roads, the N17 and the N60. The council received 10 submissions in relation to the application when it was published and they stated that they believe they were able to deal with all the issues raise in the submissions process.
