Crossmolina businesses count the cost, but are fighting back

On Monday afternoon the residents and business people of Crossmolina were still dealing with the after effects of the flooding that saw the town submerged on Saturday after Storm Desmond brought a torrent of rainfall that saw business people and residents in the town scrambling all day to save their properties. The streets of the town were littered with remnants of sandbags that had been bundled up in front of the doors of shops as owners tried to keep the waters, which reached over three feet, at bay.

At the end of November Mayo Leisure Point celebrated its post renovations grand opening and 22nd birthday in style with a day of fun for all the family. It was honoured to have Special Olympics bronze medal winner Martina Walsh officially open the new look bowling alley.

Michael Ring, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, and Cllr Michael Holmes, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, officially opened the new Mulranny footpath and village enhancement scheme last Friday morning. The multi-million euro development consisted of 1.8 kilometres of improvements to the N59 comprising new footpaths, traffic calming, pavements, a viewing promenade, bicycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, picnic tables, and benches.
Minister Ring said at the opening: "I was delighted to officially open these improvements on Friday morning with Cllr Michael Holmes, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council. The completed promenade has been finished to a high standard and I believe it has transformed the village. It is wonderful to see families and children enjoying the pedestrian-friendly space, taking a break or having a picnic while admiring the spectacular views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.

Towns in Mayo were this morning counting the cost of the damage cause by flooding after storm Desmond caused lashed the county over the weekend. Crossmolina was particularly badly hit by the storm with the River Deel bursting it’s banks and flooding the town.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny had a busy schedule around Castlebar on Monday, first launching the West Region Action Plan for Jobs alongside Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation Richard Bruton in Cashin Print in Castlebar. The pair followed that with a tree planting ceremony at the IDA Advance facility on the Breaffy Road, which is due to see construction begin in quarter one of next year, before the Taoiseach paid a visit to the site of the new swimming pool and Outdoor Pursuits Academy at Lough Lannagh on which work began this week.

A woman who was seriously injured in a crash between a truck and a car yesterday was airlifted to hospital following the incident. The crash happened on the N17 at Claremorris at around 12 noon yesterday afternoon (November 19). At the time of going to print, no further update on the driver's condition was available.
The female driver of the car was the sole passenger in her vehicle and the truck driver was uninjured in the collision. The road was closed following the crash for a Garda forensic collision examination, and the driver was airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

The UN Climate Conference in being held in Paris this December where world leaders are gathering to finalise a global agreement on climate change. Millions of people around the world are joining together the weekend before the talks begin to call on world leaders to create a low carbon, just and sustainable, future for all. In Mayo, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and members of the public will join in and ask the Government to represent us in Paris by coming to an agreement to take definite action on climate change.
In Belmullet next Friday, November 27, on the Shore Road in Belmullet, people are asked to go along at 2.30pm to stand together along Shore Road to protect the town from climate change and rising sea levels. People will line the shore beginning at the pier to send a message from Belmullet to Paris to protect the town's future.
