Rural policing policy to be expanded

A plan to beef up the visibility of gardai in rural areas that was trialled in the Belmullet area is being currently rolled out across the county. Chief Superintendent Pat Diskin told the members of Mayo County Council this week about the project that was first carried out in the Belmullet area and how it would now be spread out across the county.

Conway-Walsh challenges Taoiseach on funding for R312

The allocation of €500,000 for the R312 which links Castlebar to Bangor could be up to €49.5 million less than what is needed to do the job properly according to Sinn Féin general election candidate Cllr Rose Conway Walsh. The allocation of the funding was welcomed by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny who said that, “I am glad to announce that Government has allocated half a million euros to the R312 which has been the subject of concern for some time and which the recent floods again highlighted. The money will be used to realign a dangerous bridge at Glenisland and to rectify the flooding problems at three locations along Beltra Lough which flooded recently.”

Fianna Fáil General Election candidate for Mayo Cllr Lisa Chambers says securing home ownership and tackling homelessness is one of the party’s key priorities and is one of the core issues in its General Election campaign.

Cllr. Chambers commented, “Families across Mayo have been failed by this Government, which has presided over the worst housing crisis in the history of the state. According to the latest figures there are over 750 families and 1,600 children sleeping in emergency homeless accommodation nationwide. This is a shocking and shameful record. Despite all Minister Kelly’s posturing, fewer than 246 new social homes were constructed in 2015 resulting in surges in social housing waiting lists across the country. The housing list in Mayo has doubled over the past two years. There were 2,965 people on the local authority housing list in 2015 – up from 1,479 in 2013.

Tender for Belmullet Sewerage Scheme to be selected - Ring

Michael Ring T.D, Minister of State for Tourism & Sport has welcomed confirmation from Irish Water that the preferred tender for the development of the new €9 million waste water treatment plant in Belmullet will be decided within the next week and the contract will be signed within a number of weeks thereafter.

Browne family put Westport House and Estate on the market

There was shock around the county yesterday morning when it emerged that the Browne family had put Westport House and Estate on the market. The family said they had reluctantly and sadly agreed to the sale of the house and estate, having made the decision after meeting with the estates administrators who were acting under a remit from the High Court.
