Castlebar Community Development Association presents cheque for €400,000 to Mayo County Council

At a presentation ceremony which took place at the start of the month in Aras an Chontae, Castlebar, the members of the Castlebar Community Development Association presented a cheque for €400,000 to Mayo County Council as the community contribution towards the National Outdoor Pursuits Centre which is being constructed by Mayo County Council at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. The outdoor pursuits centre which includes a state of the art swimming pool is the result of a partnership between Mayo County Council and the Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

JCI Mayo will host a public speaking event on Wednesday February 24 in the GMIT Innovation Hubs, Castlebar, at 7pm with the trainer for the evening being Máire Garvey. Ms Garvey is an excellent trainer and a highly successful member of Westport Toastmasters Club. A resident of Westport, she has been an active public speaker for most of her adult life and is passionate about helping people of all walks of life overcome the innate fear of public speaking.

Two hundred and fifteen apply to Knock Marriage Introductions

Last year the Knock Marriage Introduction Service celebrated its 48th year of introducing people and it had 215 applications from all over the country and the UK to the service. The service, which is Ireland's oldest dating agency, started in 1968, claims to have 930 marriages over the the past 48 years and last year it had five marriages and three engagements from people who met through the service.

Breaking down the applications to the service last year, the largest numbers came from the west of the country, with 30 applications from Mayo, 25 from Galway, 12 from Roscommon, 11 from Sligo, and six from Leitrim, with two applications from both England and Scotland also looking for introductions.

New anger management programme for Mayo

Knock Counselling Centre, in conjunction with the Irish Association for Anger Management, will run an evening programme for adults who wish to express their anger in a healthier way.

The popular 'Temper your Anger', anger management programme will start on Tuesday April 12 and run for six consecutive Tuesdays. Fiona McCarthy, director of Knock Counselling Service, highlighted the importance of such programmes taking place in the community. “At present there are very few psycho-educational programmes on stress and anger management available, so we are delighted to be collaborating with IaAM once again to deliver this programme in Mayo,” she said.

Mayo urology service declined by HSE - Cowley

Dr Jerry Cowley Independent Candidate for Mayo says that he has learned that the HSE were offered a consultant urology biopsy service at Mayo University Hospital Castlebar five years ago but they declined to initiate such a service. Dr Cowley stated that Galway based consultants dealing with Mayo urology patients saw a great need for a urology consultant prostate biopsy service in Mayo but this was not acted on by the HSE despite the recommendation of the specialist urology consultants.

The primary duty of any government is to keep its people safe, yet, at present, many Irish citizens are living in fear as serious violence escalates across the country says Renua candidate for Mayo Michael Farrington. The candidate for next weeks election said that "The front pages of our newspapers are dominated by graphic images of violent and deadly crimes and, more recently, the funerals of some major Irish criminals, who believe that murder is an acceptable way to end a dispute. It is somewhat ironic that these criminals have no respect for the laws of this country and, no respect for the lives of the many innocent people their behaviour puts at risk, and yet they will have no trouble hiding behind our laws, demanding its protection and “their rights”.The attitude of the late Coalition towards criminality has been characterised by inactivity and apathy."

Taoiseach: €14,000 for Castlebar Social Services

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed €14,000 in funding for Castlebar Meals on Wheels which will allow it put a refrigerated vehicle on the road to provide meals to the elderly in Castlebar and the surrounding area.

"This small grant means a lot to this organisation who work so hard to improve the lives of the elderly in Castlebar and many of the surrounding areas," Mr Kenny said. "They provide an invaluable service and I am glad that they have secured this funding. Only a thriving economy can keep the recovery going and allow us to invest further in valuable services and organisations like Castlebar Social Services [Meals on Wheels]."
