Taoiseach and Mayo native, Enda Kenny, will officially launch the new Home Instead Senior Care office on Monday, June 20. The launch event takes place at 10.00am at the new home care office in Moneen Industrial Estate, Castlebar.
Home Instead Senior Care is the largest home care provider in Ireland and Monday marks the opening of the organisation’s 22nd home care office in the country. The purpose of the organisation is to provide home care services to help older people maintain their independence and live at home for longer than otherwise possible.

Ahead of the Irish Cancer Society’s X-HALE Youth Awards, Youth Booth @ The Maple Youth Centre in Ballinrobe is looking for local support to help them win the Online Award on offer at the national event. The group have submitted their film project ‘Not Only the Smoker Suffers’ and are calling for public support via online viewing to win one of the top awards on offer.
X-HALE is an initiative of the Irish Cancer Society which aims to empower young people to tackle smoking in their communities and raise awareness about the dangers of smoking among their peers. The X-HALE Youth Awards national showcase event in the Light House Cinema in July will be the finale of months of hard work by youth groups nationwide in preparing short films and projects to encourage young people to be smoke free.

Eight applicants for local authority housing in the Claremorris area turned down offers from Mayo County Council in recent times it was revealed this week. At the monthly meeting of the Claremorris Municipal District, the new council head of the district Pardaig Flanagan was giving the members a Directors Report on the council's work in the area.
Independent councillor Richard Finn raised the issue asking: "Just a question on the report, it says the number of [housing] offers refused is eight, what is the reason for that? What is the reason for eight refusals? Is it unsuitability of the houses?"

Matthew McNieve is a kidney transplant recipient and he is the youngest member of the Irish team.

Two lads from Mayo have graduated from Boot Camp and will travel to Kerry as Rose Escorts at the 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival. Mark Duffy (24) and John Marren (27) were among the 65 guys who will be the Rose Escorts to 65 Roses taking part in this year’s extended festival from August 17 to 23 in Tralee. The lads were put through their paces over the June Bank Holiday Weekend at the annual Boot Camp in Dingle, Ballybunion and Castlegregory along the Wild Atlantic Way in Kerry.

A man who sexually assaulted his four young daughters in a “horror of a home” has been jailed for four and a half years. Judge Patrick McCartan said that Mayo native Bernard Cunningham (66) has never shown any remorse for subjecting his children to “unspeakable mental and physical cruelty”. Last April a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court returned unanimous guilty verdicts on eight charges of indecent and sexual assault committed between 1978 and 1992.
Cunningham, of Royston, Kimmage Road West, Dublin, had pleaded not guilty to the charges. At his sentence hearing Judge McCartan noted how Cunningham had met the case by instructing his lawyers to put it to his daughters that they were lying. He noted the “absolute absence of any remorse” and said the victims had been subjected to the most protracted and careful probing during cross-examination of their testimony.
