Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo Lisa Chambers says urgent investment is needed in the ambulance fleet in the western region to ensure that turnaround targets are being met. The latest data supplied to Fianna Fáil reveals that only 9.5 per cent of ambulance calls at Mayo University Hospital were cleared within the official 20 minute window.

As a result of the Westport Airshow there will be a number of temporary road closures and traffic restrictions throughout Westport on Sunday, May 14. A comprehensive traffic management plan is in place to get Westport Airshow visitors in and out of the town as quickly as possible. The organisers of the air show are encouraging visitors to the event to travel sustainably, ie, walk, cycle, car share or take public transport. There will be designated car parks available for visitors.
Formal road closures will be in place covering the event from 12am to 7pm. This will be from the Ardmore Road to the statue at Hoban's Centra at the Quay. A number of manned closures allowing local access only will be in place from 10am to 7pm including (1) The Quay Road from the Leenane Road junction to the statue at Hoban's Centra at the Quay; (2) Ardmore Road; (3) Quay Coast Road at Belclare Junction; and (4) Doon Road at Castlebar Road junction.

Mayo native Anita Brady has just published her debut children's novel, The Protectors of Dromgoon, which is the first in a series of three books. Ms Brady, who is originally from Swinford but now lives in Cavan, told the Mayo Advertiser: "I wrote the book because I wanted to show my two boys that reaching for your dreams no matter what stage in your life is possible. Self-doubt and fear should never hold you back.

As part of its Achill Goal to Work sports coach training programme Mayo Sports Partnership, in association with Cycling Ireland, is hosting a Ride Leader Award training programme on Saturday, May 20 based in Tonragee Community Centre. The course will run from 9am to 5pm and the Cycling Ireland Ride Leader Award aims to provide leaders with an introduction to cycle leading and the competencies required to lead and manage groups on a cycle.

Three groups of young people from Mayo were jubilant at being shortlisted for the all-Ireland ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards Final Showcase and Awards Ceremony to be held in the Mansion House, Dublin, on May 23.
From a list of 84 national finalist groups from across Ireland that will showcase their environmental action projects at the event, two projects from St Louis Community School, Kiltimagh, and one from Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh, have reached the prestigious finals with their innovative projects that range from promoting good eating habits at school, to raising awareness of the dangers of microfibres, and producing a sustainable fertiliser from seaweed.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed investment of €3.48 million for three Mayo projects as part of Better Energy Communities funding allocations. The funding will ensure local homes, community and commercial facilities will become more energy efficient thanks to government funding. The projects include a wide range of upgrades to fabric (insulation), heating systems, lighting and solar heating. At least three categories of local projects here in Mayo will receive direct funding of €1,794,928 from the Better Energy Communities (BEC) scheme administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
