Superintendent appeals for information in wake of Swinford homicide

Supt Tony Healy urged members of the public who may have even a small bit of information to come forward to Gardai who are investigating the suspected murder of Joe Deacy in Swinford last weekend. Supt Healy told the Mayo Advertiser yesterday afternoon: "Any little bit of information that people have can make a huge difference in an investigation." Speaking about the response from the public to date he said: "It's been really good, we are working through those and looking at CCTV footage and other things to progress the investigation."

Thousands turn out for National Hunger Strike Commemoration

Almost 7,000 people gathered in Ballina last weekend to take part in the National Hunger Strike Commemoration which took place in Mayo for the first time. Thousands travelled from all over the country to mark the 36th anniversary of the H-Block hunger strikes as well as honour the Mayo men who died on hunger strike including Ballycroy native Jack McNeela, Hollymount’s Frank Stagg, and Ballina man Michael Gaughan.

Bonamh Market comes back to Castlebar

Mayo Heritage Week agus Gnó Mhaigh Eo, will be bringing back, for one day only, the traditional bonamh and farmers’ market that took place for years on Rush Street, on Saturday next, August 26.

This promises to be a great day of craic agus spraoi for everyone. On the day you will find a thatcher, a woodturner and walking-stick maker, a forge will be set up and the blacksmith will display the scileanna traidisiúnta, as well as traditional children’s games made from willow and rush. Another feature of the day will be the celebration of native food, the centrepiece being a pig on the spit. On display also on the day will be traditional artefacts, old cars and old tractors and farm machinery. This promises to be a unique day and will reflect the history of Castlebar, and will feature sean nós dancing with Daithí Ó Gallachóir, traditional music with Rolling Waves, and CRC FM will broadcast live from the market on the day.

Straide launches ambitious plan for community centre upgrade

The community of Straide has launched an ambitious project to upgrade a local hall into a modern community centre with a €200,000 revamp. Straide Community Development Group (SCDG) is now hoping to fundraise €25,000 locally to get the project under way.

A five-year Community Futures Plan for Straide for the period of 2014 to 2019 highlighted the need to upgrade the local hall to create a comfortable, fit-for-purpose, community centre. The plan outlined the need for a venue capable of holding events and activities for people of all ages and interests, creating a new space that would be a focal point for the community.

Knock gets ready for influx of pilgrims for annual novena

The village of Knock is preparing for an influx of up to 120,000 to 150,000 people next week during the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock - which will run from Monday, August 14, to Wednesday, August 23. The annual novena at the Marian Shrine is one of the biggest events to draw people into the county each year and this year is no different. This year is the 40th year of the National Novena to Our Lady of Knock, the original intention behind the Novena was to recognise the unique role that Knock has to play in the life of the Irish church. The theme of this year's pilgrimage is 'Living Life to the Full' and there will be a number of guest speakers, and daily workshops along with services taking place over the nine days of the novena. Ceremonies will take place at 3pm and 8.30pm and workshops at 12 noon and 6pm each day.
