Mayo Local Employment Service has won a National Q Mark Award for Best Quality Management System in Local Employment Services at The National Q Mark Awards. The nomination puts it in the top 6.75 per cent of all audits completed by the EIQA on the island of Ireland and this win means it is at the very top of the Q for highest standards of quality and excellence.

A presentation on the Housing Capital Programme for Mayo County Council in the West Mayo region this week turned into a debate on the future of rural Ireland. Comments from the councillors followed a presentation by head of housing for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson. Achill based Fianna Fáil councillor Paul MacNamara said: "What about rural Ireland? If we build all these houses in urban areas are we going to close the door on rural Ireland? Of the 220 houses, there is nothing here for rural Ireland. The sites have to be acquired."

The price of the average three bed semi in Mayo has risen 3.5 per cent to €148,000 in the last three months, according to a national survey carried out by Real Estate Alliance. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland's typical stock home, the three bed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide to the close of last week.

EirGrid, Ireland’s electricity grid operator, last Friday announced plans to replace the Grid West electricity transmission project with a smaller-scale development. The Grid West project was proposed in 2012 to connect large amounts of renewable energy to the grid. The decision to replace it was made due to the lower than expected amounts of wind generation in the north Connacht region.

Claremorris native and author Elizabeth Reapy has won the €10,000 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature 2017 for her debut novel Red Dirt. Red Dirt was published in June 2016 by Head of Zeus. The story takes place in Australia, telling the tales of three young Irish migrants escaping the collapsing economy at home. Surrounded by cheap drink and drugs, they make dangerous and impulsive choices — finding themselves in unfathomable situations.

Irish Water has commenced work on a €0.6 million mains rehabilitation project which will ensure a more secure supply of water to businesses and residents in the Claremorris and Crossboyne areas. The works are being carried out by JRPH Ltd on behalf of Irish Water and in partnership with Mayo County Council and will take approximately 20 weeks to be completed.

They will be joined on the night by Adi Roche, voluntary CEO, Chernobyl Children International, who will highlight the work the organisation has been doing in Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum as well as other programmes in the Chernobyl regions of Belarus, Ukraine, and Western Russia. She will be joined by special guests Sandra Ganley (Mayo Rose) and Niamh Elwood (Galway Rose).
