Council budget meeting adjourned for week

Mayo County Council’s budget meeting was adjourned for a week this morning to allow for the councillors more time to consider the draft budget put before them. Fianna Fail whip - Cllr Damien Ryan proposed the adjournment of the meeting for a week, which was supported by all the other groupings in the chamber. Cllr Ryan proposed that following the initial introductary presentations by the council chief executive, Peter Hynes and the director of finance, Peter Duggan the meeting would adjourn for seven days.

Over 60 per cent of Mayo third level graduates are female

According to the latest figures from last year's census, over 60 per cent of third level graduates in Mayo were female. The latest release of findings from the Census covered education, skills and the Irish language education and skill. Among those aged 15 and over and who had completed their education, the average age of completion was 19.4 years, an increase of 0.8 years on 2011. The average completion age at national level was 19.9 years.

It was a lucky week for Mayo on the Winning Streak game show, as one lucky woman, Marian Connell from Kilmaine, spun the wheel and won a whopping €61,000 while playing for her mum. During the game the name of another Mayo man - John ‘Murt’ Hunt, from Ballyhaunis was pulled out to appear on the show this Saturday, November 25.

The Mayo Schools' Debating Competition, organised by Mayo Association Dublin, sponsored by MAYO.ie and in association with Bank of Ireland, held its Grand Final in Trinity College Dublin on Saturday last. The motion for debate was "That this house is against independence for Catalonia’, which produced a lively debate, with speeches of exceptional ability on both sides.
