The county was on virtual lockdown last night and this morning (Friday) as the region was lashed by a strong blizzard which shut schools, businesses, schools and colleges and forced the population to remain indoors under strict instruction from safety agencies.

Movie man Mulligan wins bursary

Charlestown director/writer/producer Alan Mulligan has been named as the recipient of the Film Mayo Tyrone Guthrie bursary for 2018.

Mulligan's debut feature film The Limit Of had its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh last summer, and he said winning the bursary was a brilliant end to a memorable year.

Give your spring clean a helping hand at WEEE collection days

Are you getting ready for the annual spring clean of your home? Tomorrow, March 3, WEEE Ireland will host the first of six free collection events to make it easy for householders in Mayo to say goodbye to winter, clear out the waste electrical items in their homes, and send them for recycling and recovery.

The first collection will take place in Tesco car park in Swinford from 10am to 4pm tomorrow. The following Saturday, March 10, the collection will move to Market Square car park in Claremorris from 10am to 4pm. On Saturday, March 24, you can bring your electrical goods to the Tesco car park in Ballinrobe from 10am to 4pm.

Councillors decide on new names for two Ballina laneways

Two laneways in Ballina are to receive official new names after local councillors made the decision at this week’s meeting of the Ballina Municipal District.

The decision to name the laneways, one connecting O’Rahilly Street with Teeling Street and the other Pearse Street with the Military Barracks, had been deferred from the December meeting.
