The tally numbers on Sunday morning made for interesting reading as they came in - the swell of support for Sinn Féin's Rose Conway-Walsh was clear to see from early on when the Castlebar boxes were opened. The tallies divided the county in six different areas for the sake of the counting, Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Belmullet, Claremorris and Swinford.

Going out and putting forward an alternative message to the people of Mayo is something that Senator Rose Conway Walsh has been doing for a long time now; she first contested the local elections in 2004, taking over 12 per cent of the first preference votes in the Belmullet area - but missed out on the seat. In 2009, she once again put herself before the people, this time taking a seat, after increasing her vote share to 15 per cent and getting elected on the sixth and final count.

The Green Party in Mayo have never really made a dent when the votes have been counted up in general elections in the past; going back over the past five general elections in the county the party have been able to muster a total of just 3,082 first preference votes - the single best performance by a candidate for the party in those elections came back in 1997 when Ann Crowley got 938 number ones or 1.5 per cent of the total.
