Rally fans advised to respect other road users

After a weekend of carnage on our roads, the Mayo Road Safety Working together Group have issued a road safety appeal to everyone attending the Mayo Stages Rally on Sunday, March 8, in the Castlebar area saying that road safety is everyone’s responsibility and there is one essential ingredient required for everyone’s safety and that is personnel responsibility.

Hyland hits out at road knockers

Independent Cllr Christy Hyland hit out at people who have criticised the new N5 Westport to Turlough road project. Speaking at the February meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District, he said: "I will not call it the Westport to Castlebar road, there is talk it is taking five or ten minutes off the journey from Castlebar to Westport; I will say those people are ignorant - it is not a road from Westport to Castlebar. It is a road from the west coast of Mayo, commencing here in Westport and I am asking them to vision that in ten years it will link up with Mullingar and join on the dual carriageway into Dublin.

Flynn wants action on footpaths in Westport

Fine Gael Cllr Peter Flynn has called for action to be taken to improve the footpaths around Westport town. Speaking at the West Mayo Municipal District February meeting this week, he said: "It has been something that has bothered me since I came back on to this council in June last year and I am talking about the main thoroughfares. What has really brought it to a head in the last few months has been the Quay Road - probably the busiest footpath outside the town centre. It links the Quay and the town and is used by visitors and locals alike.
