Flashing signs and spotlights on badly damaged N59

Fri, Jan 29, 2010

The elected members of Mayo County Council for the Belmullet area expressed their outrage at the condition of the N59 from Belmullet to Castlebar at a meeting of the electoral area committee this week, after they were informed that the NRA had requested a report on the damage caused to the N59 during the spell of freezing weather. “I’m dismayed, I don’t know where to start or finish,” Fine Gael Councillor Gerry Coyle told the meeting. “I was out on that road the last day and there are flashing signs warning people of potholes ahead and spotlights pointing at nothing, they’re not pointing at the potholes. You have to have an NCT for your car, but you could leave the house and your car would be fine for the NCT, but when you get to Ballina it wouldn’t pass because of the potholes you’ve hit. I want to know how much these lights and signs are costing.”

NRA give the nod to reduced Tiernaur speed limits

The elected members of the Belmullet electoral area committee welcomed the news that the NRA have agreed to reduce the speed limit around Tiernaur village in Mulranny. The members were told that the NRA have given approval for the reduction and the council now had to enact bye-laws to bring them into action. The council has already written to the Garda for submissions on the issue, to which the Gardaí has 30 days to reply. The proposed bye-laws will then go on public display for 30 more days, and the public will have the opportunity to make submissions on it. Director of Services for the area Peter Hynes told the meeting: “Once all the steps are followed the issue will come before the members of the committee again for ratification before being put before the full council for the final vote.”
