Westport Bank of Ireland garden zoned open space and town centre

During last Thursday night’s Westport Town Council meeting the controversial issue surrounding the zoning of the Bank of Ireland garden, as part of the town’s development plan, was finally decided on by town councillors as a proposal was supported to zone the garden 75 per cent open space and 25 per cent town centre.
Legal advice was given to councillors regarding modifying the initial proposal of zoning the garden 65 per cent open space and 35 per cent town centre, as any modification may lead to a legal challenge.

The superintendent of Castlebar Willie Keaveney told Castlebar District Court on Wednesday that the “influx of cocaine into Castlebar concerns me greatly”. The superintendent’s comments were made in relation to a case where a business student from Castlebar was found in possession of cocaine.

Judge Mary Devins said that the fact that a man sentenced to prison for three months in 2009 actually spent half and hour in jail was “risible”. These comments were made as the defendant appeared before her on Wednesday in Castlebar District Court for careless and drink driving offences.

The annual allowances and expenses paid to the elected members of Mayo County Council came in at just under €1.25 million for the year just gone. The €1,244,587.37 paid out was split among the 39 people who were councillors during the year. The top 10 earners collected €524,889.25 among them. The top 10 earners though does contain seven members who either retired from their seats or lost their seats in the local elections held in June last year and were entitled to gratuities for their service, as well as the two councillors who held the position of cathaoirleach during the year.
