Achill Island is set to get a new pub and shop in the tourist hot spot of Keel if a new planning application by a local developer is given the green light. Paul McNamara, who was recently approved by An Bord Pleanala for a major commercial and residential complex at Achill Sound, has now launched an interesting project to demolish the old Amethyst Hotel at Keel and bring the once-popular venue back to life as a major new pub.

Mayo swim coach Trevor Devlin has recently had some fresh artwork added to his growing tattoo collection. This latest addition is especially symbolic as not only is it high quality Japanese art but it also represents the story of Devlin’s recent brush with cancer.

An employee of Eircom who tried to prevent thieves from fleeing the scene of a crime by hanging onto a van was commended by Judge Mary Devins at Ballinrobe District Court, where a Galway man faced theft and dangerous driving charges arising from the incident.

Passengers were thrown into further disarray this week as their travel plans were forced to change on Wednesday following the cancellation of flights from Ireland West Airport Knock due to the plume of volcanic ash over Irish airspace. However by Thursday morning operations had resumed after the Irish Aviation Authority were informed that volcanic ash in the atmosphere, from the Icelandic volcano, had stabilised.
