Mon, Jun 21, 2010
The issue of anti-social behaviour was the catalyst for a long debate at a meeting of the Castlebar Joint Policing Committee this week. The meeting was told of a number of incidents of this type of behaviour over the recent past, with one member of the public retelling the harrowing ordeal he is currently suffering at the hands of his neighbours and the lack of interest the landlord of the rented property has shown towards the issue. Castlebar Mayor Cllr Michael Kilcoyne also told the meeting of an incident he was made aware of early in the week. “I got a call from a relative and the carer of an elderly man about an incident at the weekend. The man, who lives on Linenhall Street, was outside at 1.30am last Saturday night on the street and three young fellas urinated on him. The gardaí know about this and are investigating it, but the poor man is traumatised after it and his carer and his relative who rang me are very concerned about him.” Cllr Ger Deere told the meeting, “This was a terrible act to carry out and I hope that those who carried it out were caught on camera on the street to help the gardaí investigate this properly.”

Mon, Jun 21, 2010
The new Kiltimagh local area plan, which has proved controversial at a number of stages, was finally given the goahead this week at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council. Its passage through the various stages up to now has been rocky with a number of issues holding it up. At Monday’s meeting, the plan was proposed by Cllr Eugene Lavin and seconded by Cllr Joe Mellet. However Sinn Fein councillor Gerry Murray put forward a counter proposal to have a constraints study carried out on the link road in the town that is included in the plan, following representations from a number of constituents in the area. Cllr Murray asserted he was able to call for the constraints study as the council had included in the County Development Plan an objective to upgrade the road in Kiltimagh to a national primary route, and because of that a constraints study should be carried out on the road. However Cllr Murray’s submission was refuted by the council executive which asserted that the link road would only ever be a local road under council control, not a national primary route under the control of the NRA, and no constraints study could be carried out on the road. After a lengthy debate between Cllr Murray and the council executive, the motion was carried as proposed and seconded.

Mon, Jun 21, 2010
Castlebar based independent county councillor Michael Kilcoyne this week alleged that the housing grants for the elderly scheme run by the council was cut by more than the 25 per cent that councillors thought they were voting for when they passed the proposal at the previous month’s meeting of the local authority. Cllr Kilcoyne told the monthly meeting of the council this week: “I believe that the housing improvement grant for the elderly has been cut from €10,500 to €6,500, this is more than the 25 per cent cut that was voted for by members last month. I urge you all to reconsider this cut, because I don’t believe that the members fully understood what they were voting for.” However the cuts in the grants to the elderly were strongly defended by a number of councillors as it was the only way to free up the grants and pay the largest number of people who were entitled to grant aid. Fine Gael councillor Eddie Staunton told the meeting: “The reason we brought this forward was so we could be fair to everyone and the cuts were 25 per cent all, around not 50 per cent as Cllr Kilcoyne is saying.” Fianna Fáil councillor Annie May Reape also backed the cuts, saying: “I make no apology for proposing this motion, you are scaremongering, Cllr Kilcoyne.”
