Westport based The Learning Curve Institute, one of the west’s fastest expanding training and education providers, is delivering a host of new FETAC accredited short term courses and Leaving Cert oral courses in The Mayo Education Centre, Castlebar, starting in May.

“The Learning Curve has always wanted to have a suite of FETAC accredited part-time courses across a variety of subjects all over Ireland”, says Liam Printer, director of The Learning Curve Institute. “The new FETAC Level 4 beginners French and Spanish and Level 5 drug and alcohol addiction and social studies courses have proved really popular so we’re delighted to now bring these courses to the people of Mayo.”

St Patrick’s Day road safety blitz

The Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána have announced a major road safety blitz in the run up to the high risk St Patrick’s Day period as the latest road collision statistics show there have been 15 more road deaths to date in 2011 compared to last year. There have been increases in the number of motorcycle, passenger, and driver deaths.

Donncha O’Connell, lecturer in law at NUI Galway and human rights campaigner, has announced his candidacy in the forthcoming Seanad election on the NUI panel. Mr O’Connell, who comes from a well-known family in Swinford and whose mother, Bríd, is one of the Hughes of Westport, is one of 27 candidates seeking election to one of the three seats on the panel for which voting commences by postal ballot between March 21 and April 27.

Judge adjourns drink driving case on statements issue

Judge Mary Devins this week adjourned a drink driving case until July 19 as she awaits a High Court direction on the issue of Garda statements. Judge Devins has put forward a case stated to the high court in regard to the issue of Garda statements that look to be formed from a template rather than written up individually by gardaí after incidents.
