Obama to visit Mayo?

The possibility of US President Barrack Obama coming to visit Mayo picked up momentum this week. Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney said this week that there were “obvious reasons” why Mayo could be included on the State visit of the US President with it being the home of Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Story Land, the online RTÉ competition featuring six-minute episodes of new Irish television, announced that the drama Lucky Run has advanced to the second last round. The programme is written and directed by Achill native Colm Cafferkey and tells the story of Robbie Dolan trying to piece his life back together after a severe night on the tiles. Also featured are Westport natives Donal Maher and Owen O’Malley. The drama series is produced by Capaillín Bán, which was founded by Shrule man Eamon De Staic.

No forfeiture of van used in attempted diesel theft

Judge Mary Devins this week refused an application by gardaí for the forfeiture of a van used in an attempted theft of diesel from a quarry in Kilkelly. Judge Devins had previously heard the case at the March sitting of Ballyhaunis District Court but adjourned the sentencing to consider the application. The State had applied to seize a van owned by Ian McHugh, Park Road, Swinford, and for a disqualification from driving to be imposed upon him for his part in the attempted theft. Giving her decision, Judge Devins decided to not grant either request by the gardaí. She convicted and fined McHugh €750 and imposed a three months suspended sentence on him for the attempted theft. For criminal damage caused to a lock on the gate to the quarry and to the tank, she convicted and fined him €500 and imposed a three month consecutive suspended sentence on him.

Race2Glory officially launched by running legend Catherina McKiernan

The Race2Glory was recently launched by Irish running legend and Olympian Catherina McKiernan in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh. The inaugural 40 kilometre multi-sport adventure race takes place in Kiltimagh on Saturday July 16, incorporating a 10 kilometre mountain run, 23 kilometre cycle, and a seven kilometre river run. Kiltimagh provides an ideal setting for such an event, with the capabilities of its natural amenities to facilitate a multi-sport adventure race and a history of athletic success; as it was home to 1924 Olympian runner Sean Lavan.

Tenants can receive up to forty five per cent off house price

Local authority tenants, who have been residents for more than 10 years, have the opportunity to purchase their house in a new scheme, with up to 45 per cent off the house price available.

During a housing SPC meeting on Monday, senior executive officer Padraig Flanagan outlined a new draft tenant purchase scheme, which allows for up to 15 years discount on the price of the house.
