Westport land deal agreed following lengthy debate

After a protracted and sometimes heated debate at the Westport-Belmullet Muncipal District on Monday, a land swap and cash deal between Mayo County Council and Inishoo Management was approved by the elected members and sent forward for final approval at the next full meeting of Mayo County Council.

Welcome for funding for Castlebar projects 
There was a warm welcome for the recent announcement of a number of major multi-million euro investments in projects in Castlebar, including the old Imperial Hotel and old Post Office, with particular praise paid to the council officials who put together the submissions for funding, by the elected members of the Castlebar Municipal District at their monthly meeting this week. Before the meeting got underway, Cathaoirleach of the district, Councillor Blackie Gavin, welcomed the investment, which all the councillors welcomed. However, Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said that he was a bit disappointed with the funding for the Military Barracks project in the town, saying that while the €2.5 million announced was welcome, it would take a similar allocation each year for the next 40 years to see the project funded in the manner it had been envisioned.

Kilcoyne raises issue of lack of home support cover due to absences

Independent Castlebar based Cllr Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue of families who are in receipt of home support to cover absences from those support workers themselves with the HSE Regional Health Forum. Cllr Kilcoyne put forward this question to the forum ahead of its meeting this week. "Why has the Home Support Department decided that they expect families who are in receipt of Home Support to cover absent periods for staff on annual/sick leave. What assessment was carried out before this decision was taken? Is there a panel in place of persons who can be employed for home support?."

Number of Covid deaths in MUH raised by Kilcoyne

Castlebar based Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne who is also a member of the HSE's Regional Health Forum, put forward the following question to the forum before their monthly meeting this week. "According to available figures 155 Covid 19 deaths have taken place in Mayo. How many of those people died in Mayo University Hospital and how many of those people tested negative when admitted to the hospital and subsequently contracted the virus in the hospital?
