Inishbofin arts festival coming up

The Inishbofin Community Arts Festival will be kicking off next weekend with the Cunningham Family taking to the stage with special guests Sharon Shannon, Eleanor Shanley, and Dessie O’Halloran. Imelda May will be headlining the second night’s entertainment with her rockabilly band. Support on the night will come from Irish folk rockers Small Cars. Cork’s finest folk singer John Spillane will round off the entertainment on Sunday May 10. Other activities on the weekend will included teddy bears picnic for children, hip hop dancing for beginners, traditional knitting workshop , falconry display, musical play, marine coastline walk, and art exhibition.

360° of the Reek at the Custom House

An exhibition of new works by Breda Burns, entitled 360° of the Reek, continues every day at Custom House Studios, The Quay, Westport, until May 10. Breda Burns is from Westport, inspired by a love of the place and people. Her dedication to the community has been marked by continued involvement with community and public art. She was a founding member of Westport Artist Studios group, and was active in the development of the Custom House Studios.

Still Life next up for Ballina film club

Ballina Film Club’s spring programme continues next week with Still Life at Ballina Arts Centre on Tuesday May 5 at 8pm. Jia Zhangke's Still Life, a deeply felt and quietly impressive film, was the winner of the Golden Lion at last year's Venice film festival, and features the superb and elegant actress Zhao Tao, charismatic star of his previous films Unknown Pleasures (2002) and Platform (2000).

Mayo concert orchestra at the Linenhall

Mayo Concert Orchestra brings its impressive musical talents to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for two nights on Monday May 11 and Tuesday May 12 at 8pm.

The orchestra presents a programme fusing classical compositions with contemporary arrangements. The orchestra has been in existence for over 11 years and, under the baton of George Lee, plays with a delightful energy and enthusiasm. This year’s repertoire brings the audience on a journey through time, including European folk dances, a selection of musical medleys, and a nod to 20th century North America. Special guests include enchanting soprano Francie McNicholas, and acclaimed Claremorris harpist Grainne Hambly, renowned for her sensitive and dynamic performances and three critically acclaimed solo CDs. A night of great music with a big feel-good factor and a great opportunity to enjoy Mayo’s great musical talent.

Lee Memphis King, after only five years as a full time professional Elvis Presley tribute artist, has risen to be one of the elite of the tribute world with a concert schedule that many could only dream about. After winning the renowned Elvis Festival at Collingwood in Canada in 2005 he embarked on building his career in theatre concerts with a live band performing a two hour one-man show. Promoted by John Hessenthaler of Original Entertainment Programming Ltd, his productions One Night with Elvis and Elvis On Tour have gone from strength to strength and now appear, often to sell-out audiences, in major concert venues across the UK. These include Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Manchester Bridgewater Hall, The Birmingham NIA, Aberdeen AECC, Edinburgh EICC, The Hammersmith Apollo and London’s Indigo2 as well as large provincial theatres.
