Unemployment figures continue to drop in Mayo

Mayo’s unemployment figures are continuing on a downward trend year on year with every area in the county reporting a drop in unemployment figures over the past 12 months.

The latest statistics figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO ) reveal that there are currently 7,582 people on the Live Register across the county, a drop of just over 12.5 per cent since last year.

The biggest decrease in unemployment was in Ballina where 348 people came off the register since November 2016, leaving just over 2,000 people in the area out of work.

Achill saw a drop of 32 people off the live register in the past year with 298 people now on the live register.

In Ballinrobe the unemployment figure sits at 544 people while Belmullet saw a yearly drop of over 100 people down to 557.

The Castlebar area also saw a large decrease over the previous 12 months with 247 people signing off the register. There are now 1,368 people on the live register in the county town.

Claremorris, Swinford, and Westport also saw drops this year. Claremorris now has 771 people on the live register.

Swinford and Westport both dropped below 1,000 unemployed with the east Mayo town down to 975 and Westport reporting 983 people signing on.
