Long awaited Achill Sewerage Scheme announced

A €7.5 million sewerage scheme for Achill Sound has been announced.

Dep Beverley Flynn welcomed the announcement as a “long awaited development”.

She said the new scheme would be a great asset to the region, and would help stimulate tourism, commercial, and residential growth in Achill.

“This scheme has been held up because of the local contribution required to be paid by Mayo County Council under the polluter pays principle,” she said.

“I am glad that this hurdle has finally been crossed, and work can now proceed without delay.”

The contract for the scheme, which will cater for a population equivalent of 1,200, is due to be signed within weeks with construction to follow immediately.

Deputy Flynn paid tribute to local Cllr Michael McNamara who had campaigned strongly for the early completion of this scheme.
