Busy weekend of action on the club scene

Castlebar Ladies

The weekend 13 hole competition was won by Una Lydon with a great score of 31pts and in second place was another member of the same fourball, Mary Rose McNulty with an impressive 29pts.

The league is nearing its end now and even though Deirdre Moylett's team is still in the lead the gap is closing with Betty Gannon's team close behind in second, followed closely again by Carmel Connaughton's team and Sheila Baynes' team. It’s still all to play for.

Ballyhaunis

The winter league round 12 competition was won by David Hannon with a score of 41 on the back nine, playing off 12. He was followed home by Alex Eaton and Derek Walsh both also on 41 with Hannon winning out on handicap. Mariette Potgieter won the ladies section with a score of 39, playing off 18. Anne Glavey came home second with a score of 35. The junior section was won by Diarmuid Finnegan who finished off the day with a score of 33 points.

Westport Golf Club

Tom Tracey won the gents’ 14 hole competition last weekend with a score of 33 points, John Gavan finished the round in second place on 32 points the same score as Charlie Golden in third place. Next Sunday’s competition for gents will be a 15 hole Fourball Betterball.

Former county footballer Mick Higgins had one of those special moments on the par three, third at Westport Golf Club on Sunday. For many golfers, to hole an eight foot putt so early in the round is a common occurrence. But when that par three is actually your 21st hole and the putt is to get your team into the quarter final of the winter league; well that’s another story altogether. The quarter final draw for the Winter League is as follows: Davy Walsh v Bill Hopkins/Jerry Moran; Mick Higgins v Pat Moran; Martin Halpin v Christy Madigan; Austin Gibbons v Larry Hingerton.

Sean Durkan, general manager, has confirmed that all fixture diaries will be posted out to members who have paid their subscriptions to date. It will be policy to issue all remaining diaries to outstanding members only when subscriptions are paid. The 2009 diary gives members a full and comprehensive breakdown of fixtures, club rules and committee members.

In their respective letters to the membership both club captains, Mary McNicholas and Sean Fitzgerald, while “tipping their hat” to the current economic situation, encourage both women and men to enjoy their golfing season and to make themselves available for club teams and to participate in the many social activities that are planned for the year. A reminder to all senior men golfers, the next competition is scheduled for Westport Golf Club on Thursday February 26.
