Foxy Jack takes to the stage in Westport

The world premiere of a newly written play about Major John MacBride Foxy Jack – Giolla Éireann was staged on Wednesday night in the Town Hall Theatre in Westport as part of this year's Westport Arts Festival. The show will also take to the stage again on Sunday night, October 2.

The work, commissioned by Gnó Mhaigh Eo in association with Muintir Chathair na Mart, involves newly written bilingual drama and poetry along with music and songs of that era, all coming together to tell the story of a Westport man who lost his life for the cause of Irish freedom.

The play has been co-written by Seán Ó Tarpaigh and Diarmuid de Faoite, this newly written bilingual dramatic production boasts a wealth of contemporary poetry as well as music and songs from the ages. The singing in the show will feature three members of Coda – Declan Askin, Brian Lennon, and Conall Ó Domhnaill, and musical accompaniment will be performed by Des Cafferkey, Julie Langan, Bartholomew de Boer, and Éanna Geraghty.
