Young people urged to register for referendum vote

As many as 3,289 young people in Mayo may not be on the electoral register to cast their votes in the upcoming referenda, according to the National Youth Council of Ireland.

The NYCI said the latest research shows up to 30 per cent of 18 to 25 years olds are not registered to vote.

James Doorley, deputy director of the NYCI, urged young people to ensure they can vote as the May 5 deadline to register approaches.

“We strongly encourage young people to register and to go out and vote in the upcoming referendums. It is your democratic right and a great opportunity to have your say in shaping the future of this country,” said Mr Doorley.

Ballina based Dáil Deputy Michelle Mulherin (FG ) echoed those sentiments.

“Young people often question the relevance of voting to them and it is shown that traditionally many don't take up their right to vote,” said Deputy Mulherin.

“I would just say that the vote is a great equaliser. No matter who you are or where you are from in our society everyone’s vote has the same value.

“Every single vote counts, one at a time. If you don’t vote you are handing your power and say over to those who do.”
