The number of people on the live register in Mayo has dropped by 16 per cent since 2012, according to the figures for January released this week by the Central Statistics Office.
Commenting on the figures, Mayo Fine Gael Deputy John O’Mahony said unemployment in Mayo has been falling for 31 months in a row now.
“Another drop in the Live Register in January emphasises that the economy is in recovery and that more people are entering the jobs market,” said Deputy O’Mahony today (Friday ).
Deputy O’Mahony said it is particularly encouraging to see uemployment falling in rural areas.
“This year there will be an increased focus on job creation outside of the main urban centres as the Minister for Jobs, Richard Bruton is preparing to launch a pilot programme of the Regional Enterprise Strategy. This strategy will specifically address growing economies in rural areas,” he said.
Deputy O’Mahony said he wants to see Mayo competing with Dublin and Cork in attracting foreign direct investment into the county.
The CSO figures this week showed there are 10,932 people on the live register in Mayo.
