January car sales in Mayo jump 30 per cent

The number of new cars sold in Mayo in January has increased by 30 per cent compared to January 2014.

The sales figures were released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

The SIMI and DoneDeal Motor Industry Review for 2014 published this week also showed car sales in Mayo last year increased by 33.9 per cent overall compared with 2013.

Last year, 1,828 new cars were sold in the county compared to 1,365 in 2013.

Last month alone, there were 626 cars sold compared with 481 in January 2014.

Kevin Connolly, SIMI centre chairman for Mayo, said the car sales figures for January are “a huge boost to the motor industry in Mayo”.

“Last year saw a recovery for the car market and to see this continue into 2015 is great news for the area,” he said.

“It will mean more money into the local economy and the creation of more jobs within the sector. The recession was particularly challenging for the motor industry and while it will take time to rebuild, the increases in sales will continue to aid recovery.”
