The Rye hit Bar Ritz as part of Finbar Hoban Presents

Next Saturday Night January 31 live at Bar Ritz Castlebar, Finbar Hoban Presents to you a treble bill of live music and entertainment with Jennifer Evans and the Ripe Intent (full band ) and local Mayo Band The Zen Yetis followed by the eagerly anticipated Galway traditional based band The Rye. Kicking the show off will be Jennifer Evans and the Ripe Intent from Wicklow. Jennifer is a self-taught musician and songwriter. Traces of Irish folk music and culture shape her music style, along with rock, blues, and popular music legends such as Billie Holliday and Patti Smith. These contrasting influences have nurtured her sound into a unique mix that encompasses a wide range of music genres.

Most recently, Jennifer has recorded a version of Dusty Springfield’s ‘Goin’ Back’ for the ESB’s latest advertisement campaign which is being broadcast on RTE. She is also the winner of RedLab Studios recording competition who teamed up with Aidan Murphy’s Bamboo Sessions. Jennifer is now at the final stages of her first professional recording with The Ripe Intent, with band members consisting of Aidan Courtney on bass, Shane O’Cuillin on lead guitar, and Abel Benito on drums, the release date for her first solo will be in the first half of 2009. Her performances alternate between solo and accompanied at venues including this year’s Fringe Festival, The Sherkin Festival Co Cork, Thomas Read’s Sunday Roast, The Mezz, and Sin é plus many more. The second band to take to the stage will be Mayo based band from Claremorris and Castlebar The Zen Yetis, the reformed band all play original material and their influences range from Kings Of Leon to Joy Division.

And finally the main headline act of the night will be traditional folk band The Rye, an extraordinary five-piece from Galway. They present one of the freshest and most exciting approaches to Irish music heard in recent times. Imagine The Pogues meeting Tom Waits in 2009. Mike Farragher of New York’s Irish Voice states, “The Rye play in their woods ‘savage driven ceoil’. They throw together modern rock melodies into a stew of expert traditional playing , turn on a dime chops rarely seen outside a lower Manhattan jazz club, and irreverence that ties the whole package together in a rowdy, exuberant bow!”. A gig with The Rye is high-spirited, full-blown entertainment, not only does the band have that really fantastic ability to make even a stone statue tap its feet, they also have this amazing stage energy and presence that makes it difficult to turn away once they start performing. This band has talent dripping from their ears. They are each fantastic at what they do and most importantly, they seem to enjoy the fact. The band’s line-up consists of Kevin Melly on vocals and guitar, Anna Falkneu (fiddle, backing vocals ), Alan Walsh (banjo electric guitar ), Barry Wallace (bass, banjo ), and Desmond Harrington (drums ). Some of the highlights of The Rye’s busy careers so far have been playing in Germany, including an open air gig for the St Patrick’s Day Celebrations in Munich with an audience of some 15,000, a radio appearance on the Tommy Tiernan & Hector show live from the Kilkenny CatLaughs festival, the Ballyshannon Folk Festival, and headline act of NCAD’s Oxjam Christmas Ball. So get up off your couch, put the remote control down, and make it down to Bar Ritz Castlebar next Saturday night January 31 for one hell of a session!
