Westport ‘boot’ home the opposition

The Westport United FAI Junior Cup bandwagon rolls on and the Covey faithful will be getting ready to hit the road in the seventh round after their 2-0 win over Freebooters from Kilkenny last Sunday.

Next up for the Super League champions is either a game against Sheriff YC in the capital or the long haul to the southeast coast and a meeting with fellow holiday hotspot Tramore, depending on the outcome of the clash of these two sides this Sunday. Westport United will hit the road on either Saturday or Sunday next, February 7 or 8.

Westport United booked their place in the seventh round thanks to two goals in a 16 minute spell either side of half time. Philip Keegan put Westport United in front just before the break when he drove the ball low to the back of the net from just inside the box. Just around the hour mark Darren Browne put the game beyond doubt when the midfielder followed his initial shot which was well saved by Mick Lambert and finished the rebound to the net.

Manulla come good in Connacht Cup

Manulla booked their place in the fifth round of the Connacht Junior Cup last Sunday in Carramore thanks to a 3-2 win over St Patrick’s. The visitors went into a 1-0 lead around the 10 minute mark when JJ Greaney headed past James Jennings. That lead lasted until just before the half-hour mark when Gerry McHale found the back of the net from the edge of the area. Manulla went into the lead seven minutes later when Keelan McDonnell put them 2-1 up. St Patrick’s pulled it level 20 minutes into the second half when Ronan Coneely grabbed the fourth goal of the game. But the homeside held their nerve, and when the opportunity arose 10 minutes from time Rory Martyn hit the back of the net from the penalty spot to send Manulla into the next round of the competition.
