Choral welcome home at Knock Airport next week

One of the county’s most popular singing groups - the Mayo Male Voice Choir - has a busy schedule lined up next week.

The choir, which is now in its 14th year and is made up of almost 50 members, has scheduled six performances over four days for Christmas week.

On Saturday December 20 they will sing in Tesco, Castlebar, to raise funds for Childline, from 2pm to 3.30pm before dashing to Cuan Chaitríona for their second choral concert of the day.

On Sunday December 21 they are performing in Abbeybreaffy Nursing Home at 3pm.

On Monday December 22, they return to Tesco, Castlebar, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm and sing again that afternoon in Boots from 4pm to 5pm.

On Tuesday December 23, they will be performing in Ireland West Airport Knock from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

The choir’s performance last year at the airport was captured in a moving short film which showed Mayo families reunited with their loved ones for Christmas in the airport’s arrivals department.

Members are looking forward to recreating the very special festive welcome home at the airport again this year.

“Our choir really enjoyed last year and we are delighted to be asked back, singing for our returned emigrants and holiday makers in Knock Airport,” said the choir’s PRO Adrian Keena.

“The airport was buzzing last year, with Midwest Radio interviewing the passengers as they emerged through the arrivals gate, a team working on a promotional video for Knock Airport, and the sheer excitement of the awaiting families, looking anxiously for the first sight of loved ones. It is hard to beat that for the Christmas spirit.”

Mr Kenna invited everyone to try to catch one of their public Christmas performances this year.

“Come along and listen for a while, we’d love to see you,” he added.
