Annual Collection Day for Croí

Today, Friday June 20, the annual flag day collection for the heart and stroke charity Croí will take place in Ballina. This annual event will see friends of Croí from the Ballina area volunteer at various locations around the town including Tesco and Dunnes Stores. Each year the collection raises vital funds for the charity to continue its life-saving work. Croí Friends Ballina and District would like to thank everyone who supports each year and all the volunteers involved who give their time in support.

Charlestown Festival

As part of the Charlestown festival which will runs over the weekend of August 9 and 10 there will be a national school art competition which will be held on the Saturday, August 9. The competition will be held in the art centre between 12 noon and 2pm. The theme for the art competition is the festival itself, the competition will be divided into three categories, infants to first class, second to fourth class, and fifth and sixth class. Entry forms are available from the Charlestown library or by contacting (094 ) 9255934. There will be a dog show for all dog lovers on Sunday August 10, and a vintage rally.

Tochar Phádraig pilgrim walk

The Tochar Phádraig pilgrim walk is a pilgrim journey with a difference. You will be able to walk in the footsteps of St Patrick along the once royal Chariot Road and be challenged by the 22 mile trek from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick. The Tochar Phádraig pilgrim walk from Ballintubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick takes place on Saturday, June 28 departing the Abbey at 8.30am. Memorial walk for

hospice/palliative care

A memorial walk in aid of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Palliative Care services will take place on Sunday July 20 across Mayo and Roscommon, starting at 1pm in each region. If you would like to walk in memory of a friend or a loved one you can participate in a walk in your area while raising much needed funds for local palliative care services. There will be a special blessing by a local priest before each event. The walks are taking place in Westport, Castlebar, Ballina, Claremorris, and Kiltimagh. Anyone from outside these areas is welcome to join in or can register a walk in their area by contacting the hospice office. T-shirts are included for all walkers and will be available at the various locations on the morning of the event. This year they will be personalised by walkers on the day with their own special messages/design -fabric pens provided. You can register in Kavanagh SuperValu stores in Castlebar, Westport, Kiltimagh, or Claremorris, on iregister.ie/memorialwalk or you can register on the day at your location. The registration fee is €20 and under 16s go free.

IWA Erris branch annual barbecue

The Erris Branch of IWA is hosting its annual BBQ in the Gateway Leisure Plex on Friday next, June 27. This is a lovely family outing with free places in kid island while you enjoy the barbecue. Ceili in Hollymount

tomorrow night

The Claremorris ceili will be held in Hollymount Hall, tomorrow night Saturday, June 21. There will be dancing from 10pm to 1am with music by Matt Cunningham.

Macra reunion dinner

Macra na Feirme celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. To mark this, Mayo Macra is holding a reunion dinner dance for past and present members on September 13 in Hotel Ballina. In preparation for this, it is looking for any old pictures of Macra dances or field days, newspaper clippings or any promotional material anyone may have. Claremorris tennis

Claremorris Tennis Club is running its annual parks tennis coaching sessions for six to 17-year-olds. The sessions will run from July 7 to August 1, and will included one hour of tennis coaching each weekday for the four weeks with qualified tennis coach Lucy Penkova. The cost is €25 per child. An additional registration session has been added for Friday next June 27 at 7pm at Claremorris Tennis Club.

Croí summer

outing

The Mayo Stroke Support Group in association with Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiac Foundation, is holding a summer outing lunch for members in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, on Thursday June 26 at 12 noon. The outing is a special occasion to mark the end of the spring programme 2014 and to welcome the summer break. Since January the Mayo Stroke Support Group has been meeting once a month in Ballina and Castlebar, and the group has covered topics as diverse as ‘preventing secondary stroke’ to ‘ideas for physical activity after stroke’. This will be the first time that the Mayo Stroke Support Group will get a chance to meet the members of the Croí Galway Stroke Support Group who will also attend the event. The groups will share ideas for the upcoming autumn/winter calendar. Open garden in aid

of Arthritis Mayo

Peter and Sally are opening their garden next Tuesday, June 24, from 11am to 4pm. Their garden is situated in Bohea, Liscarney, Westport, and is part of the Clew Bay Garden Trail. Plants will be for sale and refreshments offered. All proceeds will go to Arthritis Mayo. For more information phone (089 ) 4545623.

skills workshop

Iorras Le Cheile CDP will deliver a job application skills workshop on Monday, June 30, from 10am to 5pm in Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet. This one-day interactive workshop is geared towards people who are unemployed, underemployed, or recent graduates from second and third level education. The workshop is designed to assist participants with motivation and goal setting, planning, CV writing, cover letter writing, interview preparation and advice, as well as offering information on additional services and supports available to jobseekers. There will also be additional speakers and presentations from local employment supports and the Mayo Ideas Lab. There are limited spaces available so booking is essential.
