Westport in running for Foodie Town crown

Westport has been named among Ireland’s top 10 ‘foodie towns’. The Restaurant Association of Ireland listed the best 10 towns for gastronomy and put Westport in the the running to be crowned Ireland’s premier foodie destination.

A representative from the Restaurants Association of Ireland and An Post, sponsors of the competition, will now visit Westport to assess the town’s foodie credentials. A national public voting campaign is also running at www.foodietowns.ie

The town which comes out tops for the competition judges, and on the public vote, will be officially named the Foodie Town of Ireland. The title recognises a destination that actively promotes itself through joint promotional activities such as food festivals, gourmet trails or farmers’ markets, as well as great dining experiences.

Pádraic Óg Gallagher is president of the Restaurants Association of Ireland. He said these are exciting times to be involved in the food and tourism industry in Ireland, and for local businesses to show the nation the pride they have in their communities. “Winning the title of ‘Foodie Town of Ireland 2014’ will provide a competitive edge to towns wishing to promote their areas to incoming tourists,” he added.
