Competition season gets into full swing around the county

Balla

Adrian O’Connell was the winner of last weekend’s stableford competition sponsored by Lawnmower and Tool Hire, Castlebar. O’Connell’s scoring on the back six holes kept him in front of Bob Leggett and Fenton Barrett when the scores were totted up. Each of the three men finished on 37pts. In the ladies’ competition, Catherine McNulty was the clear winner with a score of 39pts, she finished five points in front of Patricia Conwell in second, and Aine McSuibhnie in third place.

Ballina

In the ladies’ Thursday competition last week, Marie Forde was the winner with a score of 28pts. Second place went to Helena Syron on 24pts and Pauline Gilger Tuohy finished in third place on the day.

Ballinrobe

Michael McManamon was the winner of the gents’ competition last weekend with a score of 37pts. He finished three points in front of Declan Flaherty in second place with Paddy Lee taking third spot. The gross prize went to Aaron D’Arcy, with Ned Kinnane the front nine winner and Martin Hughes the top man on the back nine. In the ladies’ competition, Marie Burke was the winner with a score of 35pts, she finished just one point in front of Aine Melville in second place with Carmel Sweeney coming home in third place. Deirdre Daly was the winner for the front nine competition and Catherine Burke on the back nine.

Castlebar

Dunnes Stores was the sponsor of both gents’ and ladies’ weekend competitions.

The winner of the gents section with a whopping 43pts was James Rocke. Rocke won on a countback from Martin Newcombe who also had 43pts. Paddy Grogan finished in third place a point further back.

In the ladies’ section Nicola Sheridan emerged the winner with 39pts. Her back nine play secured her the win from Mary McKeown who also scored 39pts, while Carmel Moran finished in third place.

Cáirde Mhaigh Eo classic

The Cáirde Mhaigh Eo golf classic will take place in Westmanstown Golf Club, Dublin, on Friday April 25. Anyone interested in supporting the day should contact Sean McNamara 087 9096300, Noel McLoughlin on 087 2508958, Willie McGee on 087 2865811, or Jim Murphy on 087 6502690.

Mulranny

Paddy Chambers bagged the first golfer of the year competition last Sunday and with it the valuable prize of free golf for 2015 on the course. Chambers shot a great 65 to win out by three strokes from Vinny Gannon in second place, with Rick Kelly another stroke behind in third. Saskia Eland was the winner of the ladies section also with a score of 69. This Sunday will see the weather delayed Mulranny Park Hotel Winter League final going to the tee at 12 noon.

Swinford

In the Morriscoe Cup last weekend Peter Moore with a score of 67 on the back nine took the win, Gerry Roynane came home in second, and Declan Munnelly finished in third. The seniors’ competition was won by Eamon Ring with a score of 21pts and Jim O’Donnell finished in second. The ladies’ 18 hole competition was won by Margaret Sweeney, Aine McDonnell finished in second, and Patricia Feeney took third place.

Westport

Last weekend saw the Jim Lyons memorial competition take place, with the duo of Keith McDermott and Padraic Corcoran coming out on top with a score of 42pts. Roland Kandiah and Tom Holland finished in second place, and Tom Lyons with his partner Kieran McGloin finished in third spot. This weekend’s gents’ competition is an 18 hole golfer of the year event. The open competitions in the club will get under way on Monday with an entry fee of €7 for members and €25 for visitors.
