Car taken from parents’ house later found crashed

A man who took his father’s car and went for a spin with friends, only for one of his friends to crash the car, was before Castlebar District Court this week, along with the man who crashed the car.

Garda Michael Toland received a report of a vehicle taken from Carrintubber, Manulla, on November 2 2012 at 7.15am. The car was found crashed into the wall of a residence in Keelogues, Ballyvary. The gates of the property were damaged, with the amount of damage being €749.

The car had been taken by James Deegan, Carrintubber, Manulla, who took the car around 3am and drove with Mark Kelly, 22 Nephin View Manor, Foxford, and another person around the back roads. Deegan said that he took the car “for a bit of fun”. Kelly drove at one stage and he crashed the car.

Deegan and Kelly both attend Youthreach and neither has previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins adjourned the case to December 18 for both to come up with half the compensation for damage caused to the property.
