Three months in prison for man who was threatening and abusive

A 26-year-old father of three who was threatening and abusive while drunk was sentenced to prison at Wednesday’s sitting of Castlebar District Court.

On Saturday June 15 2013 gardaí were called to an incident at Gort na Folla, Turlough, Castlebar.

Owen McDonagh, 27 Castlegrove, Castlebar, who was at the scene was intoxicated and was aggressive towards gardaí. He was observed to punch his hand towards others saying, “don’t tell the gardaí anything.”

McDonagh has 54 previous convictions. According to his solicitor Gary Mulchrone McDonagh had been assaulted by another person, but this person left the scene before gardaí arrived.

Mr Mulchrone said that his client had relapsed that day and had consumed alcohol; McDonagh is currently off drink and drugs and is engaging with the probation service.

For being threatening and abusive Judge Mary Devins convicted and sentenced him to three months in prison. The intoxication in a public place charge was taken into consideration.
