Woman who died in Westport car crash named

A 24-year-old German tourist who died in a road crash in Westport on Friday morning last has been named as Franziska Zumsteegstr. She was a passenger in a car being driven by a 33-year-old man which was involved in a collision with a lorry on the main N5 Westport to Castlebar road just after 9am.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver was brought to Mayo General Hospital. He has since been discharged. The driver of the lorry was not injured.

An inquest into the death of Ms Zumsteegstr was opened on Monday in order to allow for the repatriation of the remains. A full hearing will take place at a date yet to be fixed.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision.
