Christmas festivities begin in Westport

The sparkling lights on the impressive tree at the Octagon illuminated the streets of Westport on Monday afternoon after the Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr Michael Kitt, turned on the Christmas lights, bringing some Christmas cheer to Ireland’s tidiest town.

With the lights now turned on the Spirit of Christmas Festival in the town has officially begun and with an array of entertainment on the streets of Westport in the coming weeks there should be something for all the family. This Saturday (December 6 ) Santa Claus will travel up the Carrowbeg River to arrive at the South Mall at 3.30pm before he makes his way to the Westport Leisure Park by horse-drawn carriage. Children will then be afforded the opportunity to meet Santa and let him know all of their Christmas wishes.

Young (and old! ) will also be entertained by Bob the Builder, Teletubbies, Sponge Bob, Barney, Dora, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Goofy as they assist Santa that afternoon.

The following Saturday, December 13, adult choirs will perform on Bridge Street and on the Octagon from 12pm to 6pm and while you are in town to pick up some Christmas goodies make sure to avail of the one hour free parking in town centre car parks.
