Careless driving conviction for Castlebar man

A Castlebar man was convicted and fined at Castlebar District Court this week for careless driving.

Noel Quinn, Sarnaught, Castlebar, was observed driving by Garda Kevin Carey on November 11 2011 at 12.05am. The defendant was observed to turn sharply at Gallows Hill and cross the centre white line. There was no oncoming traffic at the time. The defendant was also observed to cross the centre white line further up the road. Garda Carey activated the Garda car lights and sirens and stopped the defendant.

Quinn was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and at Castlebar Garda Station he failed/refused to provide a breath sample. This charge was withdrawn by the prosecution as he was charged under the wrong section.

Quinn told the court that he was driving at 30 miles per hour and did not recall cutting the sharp corner. The defendant said that the second time he crossed the white line was because there were cars parked on the left of the narrow street.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Quinn for careless driving at Gallows Hill. The second careless driving charge was taken into consideration.
