Winter season sets across clubs in the county

In last weekend’s Agri Spread sponsored competition, Anthony Cunnane was the winner of the gents’ section with a score of 42pts, thanks to his back nine play. The ladies’ competition was won by Jenny Glynn who scored 35pts over her 18 holes.

The individual winner in the 15 holes stableford competition, sponsored by Heiton Buckley, Castlebar, was David Ryder on 35pts. Colm O’Neill came second on 33pts and Tom Mulloy was third on 33 pts. This weekend’s competition is sponsored by Sheridan Electric, Castlebar, and you may play as a winter league team member or an individual.

Team positions, after round one of the Mulranny Park Hotel Winter League, shows one point separating the teams of Fergus Rothwell, Paddy Chambers, JJ Kelly, Michael Cafferty and Liam Walshe, Christy McDonnell, John Feeney, Tony McDonnell on 97 and 96 pts respectively, with the favourites, consisting of Dwayne Flynn, Noel O’Malley, Enda Lonergan and Owen Vincent Gallagher in third position on 92 pts.

The Autumn Cup singles match play semi-finalists are now known. Colin Cooney meets Dwayne Flynn while Colm O’Neill will be hoping to strike a blow for high handicappers, when he opposes Fergus Rothwell. The annual dinner dance takes place on Saturday week, November 10, in Mulranny Park Hotel.

A nine minute documentary about Westport Golf Club was posted on YouTube last week. The New Zealand film crew visited Carrowholly during the summer and unfortunately the day was slightly overcast. Gar Golden and Alex Mealia play a central role in the video clip commenting on the history of the club and giving an overview of the championship course. It would be remiss not to mention Padraic Duffy's score of 51pts in last week’s senior competition. Such a score, even under ‘winter rules’ in Westport, is a magnificent round of golf and to break the magical 50 point stableford barrier for the first time this century in a club competition can certainly be described as a truly remarkable sporting accomplishment.
