President pays tribute to Jim Fahy on his retirement

Tributes were paid this week to journalist Jim Fahy who retired over the weekend after a career of almost 38 years as RTÉ's longest-serving regional correspondent.

Uachtarán na hÉireann, Michael D Higgins, was among those paying tribute to Mr Fahy, who as western editor regularly brought stories from Mayo to national attention.

President Higgins stated: "Every single thing which happened in the west of Ireland, be it political, cultural, international, the first thing people would say to each other was, 'Have you contacted Jim Fahy? He had a kind of seductive charm that made it inevitable you would talk to him; and at the same time, he was unrelenting in asking the tough questions."

A recipient of more than 40 awards during his distinguished career, RTE described Jim Fahy as the epitome of old-world courtesy, consummate hard work, with a steely and dedicated professionalism which served the broadcaster and country in a manner without parallel.
