MIA in running for MAMA award

Mayo Intercultural Action, a voluntary organisation that provides support to the county’s immigrant population, is in the running to receive one of this year’s Media and Multicultural Awards (MAMAs ). The MAMAs, now in their seventh year, recognise the people, groups, companies, institutions and media platforms that promote diversity and multiculturalism in Ireland and the awards ceremony will take place in Dublin on Thursday November 27.

MIA has been nominated in the Groups in the Non-Governmental Sector and is competing with two other projects for the award. MIA is an organisation that exists to make newcomers to Mayo feel welcome and to help them sort out any difficulties they may have. Based in Castlebar, MIA was established in 2004 and provides a range of legal, educational, and social services to people from all over the world who are resident in Mayo.

This year’s awards include a special bursary of €5,000 from the Iris O’Brien Foundation to an individual or organisation which has positively responded to cultural diversity in Ireland. In addition, there are two overall awards: the National Action Plan Against Racism Award and the Judges’ Special Award.
