Mayo retailer appointed to national Spar Council

Michael Mullahy, retail manager of Corrib Oil Group which includes 13 Spar stores across the country, has been appointed to the National Council of Spar Retailers (NCSR ) for 2011/2012, after being nominated along with 11 of his peers from across Ireland to represent Spar’s 460 independent retailers in developing the group’s overall strategy and policies.

The NCSR is a representative body of Spar and Spar Express retailers encompassing urban and rural-based stores. The NCSR operates on a voluntary basis whereby the elected members meet with the management of Spar’s parent company, BWG Foods, throughout the year to discuss matters of relevance to the wider group.

Managing director, BWG Foods (operators of Spar ), Willie O’Byrne, said: “I want to congratulate Michael and I wish him and his colleagues well over the next two years. I encourage the wider Spar group of retailers to communicate frequently with Michael and the other council members to ensure the consultation process is as representative as possible.”

Speaking about his appointment to the council, Mr Mullaly said: “I am honoured to be appointed to the NCSR. Being part of Ireland’s leading local retail group brings great benefits to our local customers, staff, and our business. I look forward to contributing to the development of group strategy and policies in order to ensure that we continually improve the quality of our service to local customers.”

The Corrib Oil Group Spar stores are located in Westport, Castlebar, Louisburgh, Ballinrobe, Swinford, Tuam, Loughrea, Gort, Birr, Portlaoise, Carrick on Shannon, Castlerea and Roscommon. In conjunction with the retail shops, Corrib Oil also operates a very successful oil distribution business employing in excess of 400 people as well as supporting local suppliers and various community initiatives. The company has recently been presented with the prestigious Spar 5 Star Award for excellence in food retailing.
