Almost €3k raised by man who was ordered to climb Croagh Patrick

A Donegal man who was ordered by Judge Seamus Hughes to climb Croagh Patrick has raised almost €3,000 for charity.

Joseph McElwee, Aughavennan, Rathmullan, was before Judge Hughes in September where the court heard that the defendant was threatening and abusive to gardaí, telling one of them to “fuck off” back to Mayo. The judge told McElwee to climb the Reek and do the four stations of the holy mountain “in order to have recognition of your fellow Irish people”.

At this week’s sitting of Milford District Court, the defendant produced photographic evidence of him, his wife, and 12 friends climbing the reek. A total of €2,900 for charity was raised.

Judge Hughes ordered €1,450 of the cash to be given to the Donegal Hospice and the remaining €1,450 be donated to the Adult Mental Health Services at Mayo General Hospital.
